HDBaseT Deployment

CAT Cable

What to consider before implementing HDBaseT:

HDBaseT is a connectivity standard that has gained popularity and is fast becoming the standard for whole-home and commercial distribution of uncompressed HD multimedia content.

There are some factors to consider before implementing the technology in your solution.

  1. Understand the technology that you are working with in your application;
    • HDBaseT is a high speed data transmission format that compresses audio and video signals into data packets. The packets then are transmitted across CAT cable where they are converted back into AV signals. A major consideration here is data – if a packet is lost, there may be errors and there is no recovery from lost data. This type of error is are very easily seen in video applications.
    • Analog signals are also difficult to transmit over HDBaseT. First, the signal has to be converted to digital and in order to be successful, this conversion must be done at a very high level. If you are working with Analog signals, be sure to test any HDBaseT solution with your source before making your decision to buy in.
  2. Understand the Environment and the application:
    • Does the application you are creating suit HDBaseT? What are your needs? Things to consider here when choosing a technology are distance from transmitter to receiver, Power requirements, connections, links and the complexity of the system. Be sure to plan and test!
  3. Cabling:
    • Ensure you have the correct cables to transmit the data in the environment you are in. If you have a high-density installation, CAT5e cables will likely not give you reliable service, and you may experience errors from crosstalk. To ensure the best performance, use CAT6a for steady video, and to eliminate crosstalk.
  4. Future Readiness:
    • Leave room in your installation for increases in technology. Don’t max out your technology – whether it is your matrix switch, video wall controller, or cabling, don’t install at the limits of their capabilities now – leave room to grow. For example, ensure you are prepared for higher resolution video, or larger displays as technology evolves and becomes available.

Summary: Understand your application, the requirements of the technology as it applies to your installation, use the correct cables and be ready for technology to evolve to ensure the most success with HDBaseT.
